Here's A Peek

Crazy Life continues to be the case and I'm very excited to tell you about the journey we've been on ASAP.  However, it's not quite the time right now.  So how about a tiny peek at some sweet ladies I've had the privilege of working with?  Sound good?  Alrighty then, here goes.

My awesome niece. Beautifully Ombré.

We've been growing these layers out & I'd say with this beautiful Chocolate color she is looking FABULOUS!

Since I'm blogging from my phone we'll keep it short & sweet. But before I buzz out of here and slide into Lala Land I'll leave you with a Quick Tip:

Keep a wide tooth comb and a jaw clip hanging in your shower.  Shampoo, apply deep conditioner, comb hair to detangle and spread the conditioner evenly throughout your hair. Then simply clip it up while you wash your body. When done, rinse hair.  Voila, super intense steam re-conditioning to make the most of your time and give your hair shine and bounce!

Any tips or questions?  Leave me a comment. Love to hear from you!!!

No more washed out color!

Now fresh and rich color that totally enhances my friends features. Gorgeous!

Loose Braid

Loose Braid

Here are a few not so great photos of a loose braid that I did a week or so ago. I apologize for the bad photography but hopefully you can get the general idea. All you need to do is braid your hair down the center of your head, curving the line to the side as you come to the bottom.

Once you have your basic braid in place and secured, take your fingers and run them under the braid as far as they can comfortably go. I start with the top to set the level of fullness that I want to see.

(Starting with the sides can leave you with ruffled, uneven lift.)

Now slightly shake your hand back and forth, lifting upward.
Do the sides next and preferably do the left and right at the same time so they look even as well.
Slide fingers in and under, slightly shake and lift.
Lastly, repeat on the sides of the head below the ears to loosen the nape area.

Looks cute, huh?  It's a great relaxed and romantic summer braid.

Check out this picture. My daughter and always ready assistant tried it out on me. Pretty good job my sweet girl.

Alright, Hope you try this loose braid.
Do you think it's time for me to work on my camera issues
and start getting some real pics????!!!!!!

*Ugh* #cameraspaz

Ya think??

I have the BEST Mama in the world.  Like for real - ya'll.
No joke.  She's like the bomb-diggity.
And whether or not you  use that term doesn't matter because my Mama seriously is that.
She has patience that I can only hope for.
She has an ability to think things and NOT say them.
She may forget to get the rolls out of the oven for dinner;
but I forget to BUY the rolls in the first place.
She loves helping people anyway she can.
She goes WAY out of her way to help people.  It's amazing.
And she' not going to tell you about it either.
Oh my friends, God made her good.

So I tell you that to tell you about a card she gave me for my birthday this last year.
I was turning 43.  (* Eeegads *)
But the age is not important.  She gave me this card like I'm sure so many of you have seen before.
A card with all of these attributes that I'm supposed to have.
Well, for some reason it struck me like a MACK truck.
I'm not these things.
I've seriously turned into the most lame person I know.
I won't bore you with the list of all the lame things that I am but I will let you know how it made me feel to think that maybe, just maybe, my Mama STILL thought I was what was written on the card.

Daring:   I definitely USED to be
Ambitious:    Again, USED to be
Unique:    I guess, who knows?
Gorgeous:  Well hardly, but this is my Mama we're talking about here and
I'm sure she thought that at one time
Hard working:   Maybe this one still applies.  Maybe
Talented:  Um,...NOT
Entertaining:    When I was little and could get away with it.
Remarkable:   That would be nice.

Whether she actually READ this card, I don't know.  But I know for a little over 7 months now I have had this card sitting in my bathroom mirror to remind me of the girl I USED to be.

Is she still in there?

Do I still have what it takes to - DO???

I thought if I had it there to remind me every day that I would act on it.
If you know me at all then you know I have a saying,
"Live who you want to be".
I don't know if I made that up or if I heard it somewhere but I've always thought if you want to
be a better Christian, then LIVE like a more devoted Christian.
If you want to be a healthy person, LIVE like a healthy person.
If you want to succeed, then LIVE like a successful person.
You get the picture.

I am praying for God to help me
At this time in my life
With my husband that I have
with my sweet children that I have
with the resources that I have
with the spot I am currently in.

It's a tall order.  Or is it??
I still have 5 months left in this 43rd year of my life to recapture the woman that I USED to be.
To make me the new, improved version of me.
For such a time as this.

As I was reminded of Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.

Thanks to Andrea and David who reminded me of this yesterday while playing out on the lake.
I saw the reference tattooed on David's back.  Haha
See God uses all things for our good and I needed to see that yesterday.
I almost tried to snag the "Daring" title by surfing behind the boat but
I think my son's embarrassment would've taken away any happiness that I would've felt.
So I decided to hold off on the water surfing.
But there's still lots of lake weather here in Alabama, so ya never know ;-)

Here is my most recent pic of me with my Mama.
Sorry, no editing.
And sorry to my Mama.  Kind of mauling her a little bit.

Moxie Style Education!

My friends, please meet a great multi-talented artist and dear friend, Kris Catoe.
Kris used to work with me at Rococo Hair Design (where yours truly presently works) a few years ago.  Ok, it was a lot of years ago but don't be bringing me down.
He is a laugh riot and as a hairdresser, well.... he's got skills.
But that's not all.
This fella is also an Assemblage Artist.  He's got some incredible pieces that are just so interesting and unique.  Definitely like nothing I've seen before.
He's got a show in September; I'll post some pics of his work for you all to enjoy
and a way to purchase, if you feel so moved.
Kris, who now owns The Moxie Salon in Gadsden, Al., was kind enough to invite me to a Rusk Color class he was hosting .  So, yea, I love those Learning Mondays so you know I was too happy to accept.  Getting to catch up with my friend and grow in some Rusk knowledge,....well, it was a WIN WIN.

Here is Rusk educator,SuBee, demonstrating some new sectioning techniques for color. Loved SuBee.  Don't know if I loved her work or her name more?  What a cool name, huh?
Side note: I seriously need a name change.  I love my name, Jenny and Jenny Leigh but you know how it is.  Some hairdressers have the coolest names.  And let's face it, if they have a cool name and a British accent-BOOM- we automatically want to pay them more!!!

  *sigh* But I digress.
(I jest about my name Mama. You know I love it.:-) muah)

I have already used several of the new techniques in the salon to muchos success.
I've used Rusk products in the past so it was good to get back in there and hear
what it's all about now.
**For you at home, a super new color look would be**
trying two colors of blonde on the top of the head, above the pariatal ridge.
I believe "Betty", our lovely mannequin model, received a deeper golden blonde
on the edge and a couple of shades lighter near the top of the head.
Does that make sense?
Sounds funny but it's really pretty beautiful.
The underneath blonde blends seamlessly with the lower level of the natural hair as well as the soft, yet brighter top blonde.  The dimension is gorgeous.  Thanks SuBee!!
I enjoyed learning about the color line and def came away with some
inspiring new looks for my clients.

   With SuBee

With Subee and Tammi.

Tammi is also a Rusk educator who was helping out.
Really enjoyed meeting them both.  So if ya'll are reading this, Thanks again for answering a million questions and not booting me out after coming in late.
Hopefully we'll run into each other again.
Side note: a piece of Kris' artwork is in the background.

I am working on finding someone to do this!
Who's ready for the modern day bi-level??
Not sure what Rusk calls this but buddy I am putting this on somebody SOON!
 Would you do it??

Low and Full Ponytail

Today's post is a tribute to a totally nontraditional ponytail.
On the left is my hair on one of my many days at work when I rushed to get there.
I gave it a product fill up and followed by a rough blow dry.
Then, realizing I was running out of time, I took advantage of the volume
and whipped it into two ponytails.  I don't want to call them pigtails
because the style just didn't have a "pigtail" look.
I wore one pony behind my shoulder and one pony in front of the other shoulder.
( You know I love "Ragamuffin" style and this fits me perfectly!! )

So the photo on the right??  Well, that's a funny story.
Last night before going to bed I was perusing an old Allure magazine.
(I am quite the magazine junkie)
So I open it up and there on the page was the fuller bottom ponytail
Orlando Pita!
I was so excited; I had to get out my pics that we had taken from a while back and
share them with you guys.  So wild.
I love seeing incredible hairdressers who think alike!!!!

So here are a few more pics from my crazy day after work.

So,.... would you even consider wearing such a style??
Better yet,... what's YOUR quick fix hairstyle??

Sleek, Shiny Braided Chignon

This is such a pretty look.  It goes super dressed up or super casual.
Either way, it's a classic with an interesting twist.
One that is sure to make others want to get a closer look to see how you did it.
And the big bonus is, it is SO easy.
Love easy!
So we are borrowing a few pics from an earlier post, the braided bun.
(click on "braided bun" to take you there)

So first, we start off with a braided ponytail.  This can be high on the head or lower.
I'll elaborate on that at the end of the post.

Then give the braid a slight tug to loosen and soften the braid.
It'll make the braid more pliable.
Now just simply wrap the braid around your ponytail band and tuck the ends under.
Pin on bottom first then pin on top to secure.
Pin around the edges and since a braid is heavier and stiffer,
it may take a few pins to make sure it holds.
Sorry there aren't any pics of this stage but it's hard to snap all the steps.
I'm working on posting video tutorials.
Not sure that you want to hear me talk but then again, maybe you're dieing to hear my Alabama accent.
So here is the final look.

I LOVE this because when it's finished you really cannot tell that it's braided at all.
The shine is gorgeous and even if your hair is not in the best shape,
it will totally look like it is!

It's all about "camouflage" baby.

So my side bit of info for you:

"What's the difference in a bun and a chignon?", you ask.

In a nutshell, a bun can come in many various forms.  It can be messy or polished.  It can be pretty much anywhere on the head.  You can wear several at one time.  It can be twisted, braided, thin and airy, or tightly wound.  It's kind of been Americanized and advanced from the original, traditional "chignon".
Chignon is from a French phrase, "chignon du cou" which means bun at the nape.
You will more often associate a chignon with a more polished, sophisticated bun.  And of course, worn at the nape of the head.  It's the more formal of the two.

So which are you,
"Chignon du Cou" or "Americanized Bun"?

Polished Top Knot

Here's a Show and Tell on a slightly more Polished Top Knot.
Start off with scary, big, blown out hair.  No need to make it super straight.
The more texture in the hair before, the better!

Me - Before
( Told you to start off with scary, big, blown out hair ! )
Next, begin pulling all the hair back for a ponytail.
I always start with my front first and hold it in my hand so that I can leave a little fullness.
This will keep it from looking too slick and tight.

Finish the ponytail by brushing the nape hair into the front section.
Remember to keep it high on your head.
It's a TOP Knot.  Gots to be on TOP.

You can use a clear elastic for your pony but my hair is uber thick so I use the
super fat black bands.  It'll be covered anyway so no worries.

Using a traditional teasing comb, begin to moderately backcomb
small sections of your ponytail.

Work your way through the entire ponytail until you look this HOT!
Oh yea, it's hot!

Lightly run your fingers OVER the backcombing.  You don't want to undo the
knotting, just stretch the top layer.  This will make a pretty little nest-like look.
Seriously, it'll be pretty.

Now pin the farthest section under, swirling your hands lightly over the knot.
You'll be amazed how fast and easily your birds nest turns into a work of art.
Follow up with a few extra pins around the edges.
You probably won't even need that many.  The teasing will hold like crazy.

Summer chic for sure
Whadya think?  Easy?

Love Love for my friends who stop by and follow
Thanks tons!

Learning Mondays

I love Learning Mondays!

As you probably already know, most salons are closed on Mondays. It's great to have a weekday to handle "stuff".  But it's also the day that one can occasionally find extra education!!!  And I am ALL about that!!

So today was spent with some of the guys from Suddzz FX.  Up top's picture is with Elloy, from Austin, TX, and my friend and co-worker, Razel. I was so excited that we went together today. The last class I went to I had to go alone and it's just not nearly as fun. I have a tendency to find humor in the goofiest places and desperately need somebody to LAUGH WITH ME!  So thank you Razel for being my laughing buddy!

So the class, yes, it was great. Learned a chic-y new up-do. (I'll post on it later so I can get some good pics.)  Here is Elloy working on it.  Taken from my iPhone camera, they're not the best quality but I get so frustrated with my real camera that I couldn't bring myself to try it. The plan was to enjoy the day. Which I did.

Here we are with our new friend from Suddzz, Jason Fonte. He lives in Venice Beach, CA. So interesting to hear him say how "everybody" there has the same hair.

We tend to want to localize things like that. We think "everybody in our town looks the same".  It's everywhere and it's human nature.  It's called, "Trends". And while it's not always a bad thing, it is an opportunity for great hairdressers to keep an edge and make the trends look personalized. Not cookie-cutter.

Great layered haircut.  Rusk haircolor. No more specifics for you guys. I haven't forgotten who I'm talking to here. Can't be giving away the trade secrets.   Lol

They're filming a movie here in Birmingham (42) and one of the models from today's class is an actor in the movie.

Can you pick out the actor in the group?

My daugter's dance group did several numbers from "Cats" for their recital this year.
They also performed from "The Sound Of Music" and "Mame".  But I must say,
"Cats" was definitely my favorite!
I call her my "Angelical Cat".
I wish I could show you a pic of the whole group.  They were INCREDIBLE!

Have you seen "Cats"?  What's your favorite musical??

A little bit CrAzY over here!!

Ok I have been one CrAzY Mama over here!!

So much fun stuff has been happening with my kids that
I have been out of pocket and quite frankly,
out of my mind.
It's normal life but somehow I manage to make it look soooooo
much more complicated than it is.
I'm good at that.

But before I catch you up on some of the "highlights"
I thought I would give you a quick HAIR TIP.

When toweling your hair dry, NEVER rough the towel back and forth.

This is such a No-NO and people do it all the time.

Instead, take your towel and SQUEEZE your hair dry.

By holding the towel closed on one section of hair the water is absorbed into
the towel.  Roughly moving the towel around trying to use air to dry your hair works
but it also makes combing it out afterward a nightmare
Much like my schedule has been the last month!!!
Whew, May is over.  BRING ON SUMMER!!!

Beauty Water

I usually chug a bottle of water (20oz) in the morning and one before going to bed.
I try to sip on a bottle of water through the night.
It seems the more you drink - the more you have to have it.
It's like a GOOD drug. Water has so many wonderful benefits.
Good for detoxing the body. Good for your skin. Weightloss.  And the list goes on and on. So why do I find myself having such a hard time drinking it during the day???!!!!!!!!
What is it about this drink that presents me with such mental anguish?
I used to be addicted to Diet Coke. And I don't mean I just liked it.
It was a serious addiction.  I feel awful because I am responsible for my
husbands addiction to it too!!  I am not so proud of that. :-(
BUT, for almost a year now I have just about put the Diet Coke down for good.
So it's all good, right?   Welllllll, seems I replaced it with Dt Mt Dew.
Ok I swapped one bad drink for another. I just love and feel like I have to have
the "kick" that they provide.
So to get a handle on this craziness I have moved on to Sweet Tea.
I'm from the south so it really is the obvious choice.
As with everything else ( exception being water ) it has a downfall too.  Sugar.
Ugh. That's not good for the scale!!!!
So, eternal quest to be good,
and do the right thing,
and  ENJOY  IT

But on a happy note, I'm loving my wedge TOMS and lilac polish.
Ahhhhhh happiness.

What about you, is drinking water a pleasure or challenge for you?

Braided Bun

Today's do is the Braided Bun.
Sooo cute and sooo easy!

What do you think?
Would you wear the Braided Bun??
